The PVC version of the 3 by 3 is built from printed rigid panels clipped onto a frame. Compared with tensioned fabric, it gives a flat, firm surface onto which shelves, screens or fittings can be attached.
It takes a little longer to assemble and more volume to transport. That is the trade-off: fabric for lightness, panels for what you hang on them.
